He had a long career at sea, during which he missed taking part in any major battle, but held major commands throughout the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (except 1807-1812). He is chiefly known for his skill in commanding very large fleets, often spread over a very wide area, and for the consequent prize money which made him the richest naval officer of his day. He also gained a reputation for being very keen on acquring it. These three volumes only represent a small fraction of the documents in Keith's very large personal collection of letter and order books and loose documents in the National Maritime Museum, which occupies 124 foot of shelf space. Apart from a small section representing Keith's role in the naval mutinies of 1797, this volume reproduces documents from Keith's commands in the Mediterranean between 1798 and 1802. The first notable incident was the escape of Admiral Bruix and his fleet, which Keith, perhaps unluckily, failed to catch and bring to battle. In 1799 Keith became Commander-in-Chief at a difficult time, not helped by a prickly and uncooperative Nelson at Palermo and Naples. Malta was captured in September 1800, after which Keith's concerns switched to the Eastern Mediterranean. Here he had to deal with that other difficult naval officer Sidney Smith, who, after distinguishing himself at the Siege of Acre, signed the controversial Convention of El Arish. Keith's particular triumph was his close cooperation with General Sir Ralph Abercromby in the difficult landing of the British army at Aboukir Bay in 1801, and the defeat of the French army in Egypt.

Published in this volume are various Spanish documents concerning the Armada; a journal of one of Blake's officers in the mid seventeenth century; Boscawen's letters to his wife; the account of a Swedish officer who served in the French Navy during the Seven Years War; selections from the Hood papers regarding Prince William's service in the navy; Nelson in Corsica; Congreve's introduction of rocket warfare and letters from St Vincent to supplement the earlier volumes on him (see NRS Volumes 55 and 61).

His command of detail was formidable. Here his problems were manning and difficulties with Sea Fencibles, convoy and maintaining the blockade of Brest, all of which are well illustrated by documents. Keith retired from active service in 1807, when he married for a second time, but in early 1812 he was appointed, at the age of sixty-six, as Commander in Chief, Channel Fleet. He spent much of the time ashore at Plymouth because of ill-health, but he was again successful at keeping complex operations moving, particularly with operations to support the armies in the Peninsular. There is a final section of documents illustrating the dramatic events surrounding the capture of Napoleon and his banishment to St Helena.

James Trevenen, a Cornishman born in 1759, was educated at the Naval Academy Portsmouth, sailed as a midshipman on Cook's last voyage, served as a captain in the Baltic in the navy of Catherine the Great, and died in action in the war of Russia against Sweden in 1790. Early in the nineteenth century a Memoir of his life was written by his brother-in-law, Admiral Sir Charles Vinicombe Penrose, which provides the basis for this volume, edited and annotated for the Navy Records Society by Christopher Lloyd and Dr R C Anderson. The story of Trevenen's career provides much of naval interest. His letters from the Naval Academy appear to be the only ones that have survived by a student of that institution. His service on Resolution provides additional information about Cook's character. His subsequent career shows how the team that sailed with Cook continued as a band of circumnavigatory brothers. His plan for further exploration of the Pacific resulted in an appointment by the Empress of Russia. But when war broke out between Russia and Sweden, he served, not in the Pacific, but in the Baltic, as a captain in the Russian navy in the campaigns of 1788 and 1789. He was mortally wounded at the battle of Viborg in June, 1790.

The second half of the eighteenth century saw dramatic improvements in the health of the Royal Navy and, as a result, an enhanced capacity to fight and to successfully impose tight blockades. The menace of scurvy was tamed through improved diet and the use of citrus juice; and smallpox stopped in its tracks by a prompt programme of vaccination following the findings of Edward Jenner. The causes of typhus and malaria remained a mystery, but strides were made in containing these diseases by developing rigorous systems to control their spread. This volume comprises extracts from the extensive writings of the three medical men who made major contributions to these improvements and, indeed, chronicled their progress. They were - James Lind, who was active from the 1740s, became the first Physician of Haslar Hospital and was truly regarded as the father of naval medicine - even if his role in the conquest of scurvy was later exaggerated; Gilbert Blane, Physician to Fleet of Lord Rodney and a Commissioner of Sick and Hurt from 1795; and Thomas Trotter, naval surgeon, Physician at Haslar, and then Physician to the Channel Fleet 1794-1802. The works of these men can now only be found in specialist libraries or at considerable cost. This volume therefore comprises a valuable addition to the bookshelf of anyone interested in naval medicine.
